Google Messages may soon allow users to edit sent text messages

Google Messages, the default messaging app on Android devices, may soon get a WhatsApp-like edit feature that lets you edit sent messages.

Google Messages, a popular messaging app developed by Google that allows users to send and receive text messages, images, videos, etc, might soon get a new ‘Edit Sent Text Message’ feature similar to WhatsApp.

According to code found by TheSpAndroid, The most recent beta version of the app includes some codes indicating that a possible message-editing feature is under development.

The option to edit sent text messages is often one of the most requested features in messaging platforms. Both WhatsApp and Telegram have already this feature. And, I think Google is also looking to add this feature to its Google Message App.

There were four flags added in the beta version of the app.

  • bugle.enable_edit_ui
  • bugle.load_edit_history
  • bugle.process_outgoing_edits
  • bugle.process_incoming_edits

The first flag suggests enabling an editing UI for messages that we want to edit. The second flag involves loading message edit history from the message database. The third flag seems to handle the processing of edited messages after a user makes changes, while the fourth flag indicates processing edited messages for the recipient user.

However, the code found in the newest beta version of Google Messages is hidden behind flags and cannot be activated or enabled. Also, there is no official indication or confirmation from Google that they are working on a similar feature.

And there is no information on when it will be available or even if it goes live or not.
